We are seeking an Intellectual Property Patent Paralegal/Specialist in our Chicago office to provide legal support on a variety of tasks focused on patent matters, including gathering of preliminary technical information for patent assessment, monitoring deadlines for various domestic and foreign patent activities, and handling routine activities in connection with the maintenance and protection of domestic and foreign patents. The person will also assist with the docketing of U.S. and foreign patent matters, including patents, license agreements, and related contested matters.

Job Description/Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates domestic and international filings with the USPTO and foreign law offices and/or other foreign entities.
  • Maintains docket system of due dates for actions including responses, renewals, oppositions, Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) requirements and payment of patent annuities in foreign countries.
  • Prepares and files various documents with the USPTO or foreign counsel.
  • Prepares and records assignments.
  • Prepares correspondence to clients.
  • Prepares status summary reports for attorneys and clients.
  • Reviews and takes action on correspondence received from foreign associates.
  • Obtains legalizations and certifications.
  • Researches and compiles information pertaining to national and international patent rights including searches of USPTO records, industry databases and general legal research.

Qualifications:

  • Associates degree in any field and at least one year of patent experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with U.S. and foreign patent work (prosecution, maintenance and renewals).
  • Strong computer literacy, including proficiency in Word, Excel, and the ability to work with Innovation, PATTSY, Lexis/Nexis, and other research databases.
  • Must be a problem solver, willing to work and think with independence, handle confidential information with discretion, and accept responsibility for producing work that is consistently complete and accurate.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, highly versatile and adaptable and able to multi-task in a pressured environment.
  • Ability to handle a high volume of work and work through projects with minimal supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail and follow-up skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills.

Job Summary:

Seyfarth Shaw LLP is seeking a paralegal to support our Trademark practice in our Chicago or Atlanta offices. The Trademark Paralegal will work on matters relating to trademark, copyright and domain name matters, with an emphasis on foreign and domestic trademark prosecution. This position will interact with colleagues in a team setting and will work directly with other paralegals, attorneys, case assistants, clients and third party vendors and is expected to uphold the image of the Firm by maintaining positive contact with clients, attorneys and staff, and observing confidentiality of client matters.

Job Description/Responsibilities:

  • Assist attorneys and clients in intake, planning and managing trademark portfolios.
  • Manage multiple client-facing databases containing all completed and pending trademark matters for each client.
  • Assist with preparation, filing, prosecution and maintenance of trademark applications at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
  • Initiate foreign filings and coordinate and correspond with foreign trademark agents concerning foreign trademark applications.
  • Develop foreign filing strategies and file Madrid international trademark applications.
  • Monitor prosecution deadlines. Ensure thorough communication and proper responses are provided.
  • Prepare status charts for clients. Communicate and correspond with clients concerning new and pending applications. Maintain and expand ongoing client relationships.
  • Conduct online trademark searches and other investigatory functions.
  • Organize, maintain and update files and docket information related to clients’ trademark portfolios.
  • Domain name and copyright experience a plus.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or paralegal certificate from an ABA approved program.
  • 5+ years of extensive foreign and domestic trademark prosecution experience with knowledge of SEAGIS and CPI docket database.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, detail-oriented work environment.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral)
  • Exhibit a high degree of initiative and independent judgment with excellent troubleshooting and follow-thru skills.
  • Computer proficient with advanced skills in all Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Explorer and Outlook) required.
  • Knowledge and experience with database management and administration is preferred.
